About the Position: The Youth Worker provides group work, outreach and individual support services to immigrant and refugee youth who are aging out or dropping out from school due to various reasons.  The Youth Worker is responsible for recruiting eligible youth and provides intensive group sessions for the eligible youth.

Reports to: Youth Program Manager, Family and Community Services


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides recruitment through outreaching to immigrant and refugee youth who are aging out or dropping out from school
  • Conducts comprehensive intake, eligibility and needs assessment
  • Works with the Youth Program Manager in customizing group program for the eligible youth
  • Offers individual support to the youth
  • Bridges youth to different services
  • Liaises and works closely with schools, community agencies and partnering agencies
  • Conducts intensive group sessions for clients
  • Ensures the program meet the target units
  • Ensures all services meet the accreditation standards
  • Maintains up-to-date group records
  • Responsible for report writing and other administration work
  • Maintains statistical records for accountability, funding application/report and program development purposes
  • Attends supervision and team meetings regularly
  • Attends division staff meeting and training opportunities as required
  • Works closely with staff members of other S.U.C.C.E.S.S. divisions/offices in providing joint support to individuals and families
  • Provides support to agency wide fundraising initiatives
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by Youth Program Manager or Program Director


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor degree in Social Work, Psychology, or related discipline, equivalent combination of at least two (2) years youth work experience
  • Demonstrates knowledge about local community resources for immigrant and refugee youth
  • Demonstrates knowledge about educational system in Canada
  • Demonstrates experiences on conflict resolution and basic counselling skills
  • Demonstrates good group facilitation skills
  • Demonstrates strong problem-solving, sound judgement, multi-tasking and prioritizing skills
  • Demonstrates good knowledge of issues multicultural immigrant families and youth are facing, including social, cultural, emotional, mental health, health and sexual orientation issues
  • Demonstrates language and cultural proficiency that is applicable to the various source countries
  • Demonstrates knowledge and experience in cross-cultural communication and service methods appropriate to clients with low English skills

  • Second language an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • A good team player with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to deal effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent program planning, time management and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and basic internet skills
  • Comfortable in performing outreaching and travelling around Metro Vancouver
  • Multi-tasking and flexible
  • Flexible to program needs and event schedules


Other Requirements:

  • Clear Criminal Record Check – Vulnerable Sector Check (submitted upon hiring)
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in Canada
  • Flexible to work on evening, weekends and holidays
  • Frequent travel within Greater Vancouver areas
  • Occasional outdoor activities required
  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate an asset
