About the Position:

The Youth Worker provides group work, outreach and individual support services to youth in Vancouver.

Reports to: Youth Program Manager, Family and Community Services


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruits high school students for the after-school program
  • Provides training and support to youth volunteers
  • Works on program planning to address developmental, recreational, social and emotional needs of children and youth
  • Communicates with parents as needed
  • Liaises and work closely with school personnel to achieve the program goals
  • Liaises with different community agencies to identify volunteer opportunities for the youth
  • Fosters community development through collaboration with other service providers such as school counsellors, teachers, SWIS workers, etc…
  • Provides individual guidance to the youth
  • Provides support to youth volunteer groups to facilitate youth community participation
  • Ensures all services meet the accreditation standards
  • Maintains up-to-date group records
  • Responsible for report writing and other administration work
  • Maintains statistical   records   for   accountability, funding   application/report   and   program development purposes
  • Attends supervision and team meetings regularly
  • Attends division staff meeting and training opportunities as required
  • Works closely with staff members of other S.U.C.C.E.S.S. divisions/offices in providing joint support to individuals and families
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the supervisor or Program Director


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor degree in Social Science or relevant degree
  • Demonstrates knowledge   and   experience   working   with   multicultural   communities   and immigrant youth and children
  • Demonstrates knowledge about local community resources
  • Demonstrates good group facilitation skills
  • Demonstrates knowledge of youth work and group dynamics
  • Demonstrates good programming skills in customizing activities based on the needs of different youth groups
  • Demonstrates strong problem-solving, sound judgement, multi-tasking and prioritizing skills


Job Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English (second language an asset)
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently or with minimum supervision
  • Ability to deal effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • A good team player with internal and external stakeholders
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and basic internet skills
  • Flexible to program needs and event schedules


Other Requirements:

  • Clear Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector Check) required (submitted upon hiring)
  • Applicants must be legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Frequent travel in Metro Vancouver
  • Occasional evening or weekend duties
  • Valid Standard First Aid Certification an asset
