Duration: May 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020 (renewal subject to funding availability)

Salary: $23.00 – 25.08 per hour


About the Program:

Self-Employment Program strives to support highly motivated program eligible adults with interest and aptitude for business in their process for self-employment / business startup in Metro Vancouver. Through the program, participants obtain skills training and coaching support from the Self-Employment Counsellor.

Reports to: Senior Manager


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruit eligible participants for the program
  • Deliver program information sessions
  • Perform needs & suitability assessment and create action plans with participants
  • Provide entrepreneurial support and guidance to clients
  • Facilitate business trainings and workshops
  • Coordinate mentoring activities
  • Track and document participants’ achievements and milestones
  • Participate in community events
  • Provide participants with guidance in business plan development
  • Participate in internal and external meetings to stay up-to-date on market development and trends
  • Meet the program deliverables and targets
  • Assist with the web content development and keep the website up-to-date
  • Engage in proposal writing
  • Compile program statistics for program monitoring, evaluation and monthly reports
  • Other program related tasks as assigned by Senior Manager and Program Director


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree/Certificate/Diploma in a relevant field
  • Demonstrated experience in:
    • Managing a business
    • Analyzing and evaluating business plan proposals
    • Administering and interpreting individual entrepreneurial assessments
    • Coaching and mentoring clients
    • Performing case management e.g. working with EI clients
    • Documentation and Report Writing
    • Working with individuals with complex barriers and a broad range of cultural backgrounds
    • Building partnerships with employers, agencies, and other stakeholders


Job Skills and Abilities:

  • Fluent in verbal and written English, multilingual an asset
  • Demonstrated business start-up knowledge in BC context
  • Familiarize with WorkBC Employment Services an asset
  • Strong skills with coaching and motivating clients during the business launch and implementation process
  • Strong knowledge of BC government systems and resources as well as community resources for self-employment / business development support
  • Ability to leverage networks with employers, government agencies, and other community stakeholders to support clients to achieve entrepreneurship goals
  • Solid knowledge of local market and economic environment and trends
  • Strong individual and group presentation and facilitation skills
  • Strong digital literacy skills, including ability to market the program activities and deliver services using technology
  • Ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with diverse clientele


Other Requirements:

  • Work occasionally in the evenings and on weekends
  • Prepared to work at multiple locations in Metro Vancouver
  • Clear criminal record check required
