2010 S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Walk with the Dragon Aims to Raise $400,000

Vancouver, BC – Today, the Co-Chairs of 2010 S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Walk with the Dragon, Joann Wong, Ricky Wu and Sing Lim Yeo, officially announced the return of Walk 2010 to Lumbermen’s Arch, Stanley Park on Sunday, July 11, 2010.

Organized by S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation, the annual Walk attracts over 13,000 participants making it one of the largest community fundraising events held in Vancouver’s scenic Stanley Park.

“This year, we are celebrating our 25th year in Stanley Park. Our fundraising target is $400,000. Proceeds will allow S.U.C.C.E.S.S. to continue to provide critical un-funded and under-funded programs and services for those in need in the Metro Vancouver community, particularly seniors, women, youths, and families,” said Joann, Ricky and Sing.

Recognized as one of the largest social service providers in Canada and a multicultural, multi-service agency, S.U.C.C.E.S.S., with over 400 staff and 1,600 active volunteers, delivers a wide array of services in the areas of settlement, employment, health and housing, business, economic and community development.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. operates from 29 offices in B.C. (Metro Vancouver, Abbotsford and Fort St. John) and in Asia – including Shanghai, Taipei and Seoul. In 2009-2010, over 170,000 client-services were provided to those in need in the communities. Approximately 20% of the current S.U.C.C.E.S.S. annual operating budget of $36 million derives from S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation fundraising events, such as the Fundraising Gala, the Walk with the Dragon, and the Charity Golf Tournament, and S.U.C.C.E.S.S. program revenue and donations.

Mr. Francis Chang, Board Member of United Way of the Lower Mainland thanked S.U.C.C.E.S.S. for the long standing partnership it has with the United Way of the Lower Mainland, and commended S.U.C.C.E.S.S. for its commitment to serving diverse communities in Vancouver.

In their remarks, Premium Sponsor HSBC Bank Canada urged the community to follow their lead and support the Walk by collecting pledges and joining the event on July 11.

Representative from two S.U.C.C.E.S.S. programs subsidized partly from funds raised by S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Foundation spoke of the impact the programs have on the community. In her remarks, Ms. Helena Shi, a 2009 alumna of the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Youth Leadership Program spoke of how the program helped shape her personal development. Ms. Loretta Chiu, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Publications Manager, spoke about the Evergreen News, a publication put out entirely by volunteers and one of S.U.C.C.E.S.S.’ many treasures.

Official Walk with the Dragon T-shirts, sponsored by HSBC Bank Canada, will be given to those who raised $100 or more. For participants who raised more than $300, they will receive a Walk
2010 limited edition plush toy. For every $1,000 raised, participants will be entered into the Walk with the Dragon Super Lucky Draw for a chance to win a pair of airline tickets from Vancouver to anyone of Air Canada’s North America destinations, sponsored by Air Canada.
