S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Locations to Collect Donation for Qinghai Earthquake Victims

Vancouver, BC  – The strongest earthquake in over three decades in China’s Qinghai Province, China, shook the remote mountainous area on April 14, killing at least 760 people and injuring more than 10,000. The earthquake toppled some 15,000 residential buildings affecting about 100,000 people. It also cut electricity, water and communication and triggered landslides that blocked roads linking worst hit areas with the nearest airport.

“We express our sympathies and sorrow for the family and friends of those killed and injured. In partnering with Canadian Red Cross, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is accepting public donations at its 8 service centres in Vancouver, Richmond, Tri-Cities and Surrey. Over the past years, we have worked with Canadian Red Cross in various emergency relief efforts,” said Thomas Tam, C.O.O. of S.U.C.C.E.S.S.

Donation can be made through the following ways:

1.      Donation Collections at S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Service Centres (List attached in both English and Chinese)
2.      By Cheque:  Payable to ‘Canadian Red Cross’.    Please indicate for “QingHai” at the area of the Memo (bottom of the cheque), donate through S.U.C.C.E.S.S. offices or send to :   #307 - 28 West Pender Street, Vancouver, BC, V6B 1R6
3.      Donations can also be made online at http://www.redcross.ca/, by telephone at 1-800-418-1111, or by contacting the local Canadian Red Cross office.

“Local Red Cross volunteers continue to support search and rescue efforts and provide immediate relief items,” says Michelle Hassen, Regional Manager of the Canadian Red Cross Lower Mainland Region.  “We would like to thank S.U.C.C.E.S.S. for their support of the Red Cross’ humanitarian work on the ground.”   

The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) dispatched 500 tents, 4,000 quilts and 4,000 sets of winter clothes. Two medical teams from the Beijing Red Cross branch were also deployed along with eight ambulances, first-aid, surgery and food aid units, plus communications equipment. The RCSC also deployed one each of the water and sanitation units it used during the Sichuan Earthquake operation in 2008.
