96 year old volunteer brings joy to the faces of seniors at the Simon K.Y. Lee Seniors Care Home

Vancouver, BC - A volunteer of nine years for the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Multi-Level Care Society, Simon K.Y. Lee Seniors Care Home, Shu-Wing Mak who goes by Wayne Mak at the age of 96, is a welcome presence. Built in 2001, the Simon K.Y. Lee Seniors Care Home is located in Chinatown, Vancouver.

A friendly smile and fluency in both Cantonese and Mandarin, Wayne is able to communicate with seniors who may otherwise feel isolated, lonely and helpless.

The Care Home is run on the Eden Alternative concept which is about teaching society to see the environments as habitats for human beings rather than facilities for the frail and elderly. It states we must learn what Mother Nature has to teach us about the creation of vibrant and vigorous habitats.

Wayne is most proud of the Snoezelen centre which is a private therapeutic treatment room focusing on the five senses where those seniors who may feel agitated or in need of a calm environment can come to enjoy and decompress. Wayne mentions that “I helped to make this room possible through organizing special events such as dinners and raffles to raise money for the equipment.” He also mentions “from 2006 to 2009 I helped to raise over $100,000 for the Care Home.”

Wayne writes for the Evergreen News published by S.U.C.C.E.S.S. which has both a local and international readership and has also recently written to books. Wayne is currently the Goodwill Ambassador of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. where he continues to assist with raising funds for equipment and programs for the seniors at the Simon K.Y. Lee Senior Care Home.
