S.U.C.C.E.S.S. to Unlock the Secret of Success for Immigrants

Vancouver, BC – Today, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Employment Services (SES), in partnership with Dr. Norman E. Amundson, professor of Counselling Psychology, University of British Columbia, kicked off a qualitative research to explore the determining positive factors that have contributed to the ultimate success of new and established immigrants of Chinese descent.

“We have paid enough attention to barriers and sad stories but there is no lack of successful career built. Success often comes to those who have the foresight to see ways down the road.  Success is a result rather than a goal.  We would like to examine the ingredients of these results,”” said Thomas Yeung, Senior Program Director, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Employment Services.

Initiated and self-funded by S.U.C.C.E.S.S., this 5-month research will be conducted in 3 phases by interviewing 20 clients in 2 groups. One group of 10 will include immigrants arriving Canada between 1-10 years while the other group is made up of 10 established immigrants (over 10 years). Selected interviewees should have secured and maintained employment for at least three months in the Lower Mainland of B.C. They have had an intervention from S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Employment Services and now feel that they are successful in their work situation. The research will use Critical Incident Technique, a way of in-depth interview to dig out the secrets of successful job finding journeys. The data collected will be analyzed and compared by the research team. The research is expected to complete in March 2010 and the results will be shared with participants and the community in due course.

Founded in 1973, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is one of the largest social service providers in British Columbia with over 20 locations and 2 overseas offices. For more details, please visit: http://www.success.bc.ca/
