New Website to Help Chinese Speaking Problem Gamblers and Their Families

Vancouver, BC – S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is pleased to launch a Chinese Language Problem Gambling Website to raise the awareness of problem gambling in the Chinese-Canadian community in the Lower Mainland during the National Addictions Awareness Week 2009. The website was funded by City of Vancouver and developed in partnership with Family Services of Greater Vancouver and Richmond Addiction Services.

“The impact of problem gambling on the individual and their families is enormous,” says Tung Chan, CEO of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. “The new website provides linguistically and culturally appropriate information and materials to educate those affected by it and their families on problem gambling,” Chan continues.

Over the last decade, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. has been working with partnering agencies on problem gambling counselling and prevention program.  It has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience for the educational program on this issue.

Gambling has long been an issue in the Chinese-Canadian community. The website targets three populations: Parents, Adult, and Older Adult and Family. It provides self-assessment tool to help viewers identify and understand gambling issues. The website also provides financial management tips and community resources on how to deal with their money and financial woes caused by gambling addiction. George Chow, Councillor, City of Vancouver comments, “The website will be an effective way for many current and potentially at risk problem gamblers and the affected.  We are very supportive of local service agencies like S.U.C.C.E.S.S. providing information and education to the public and will continue to work with the province to address the issues.”

Founded in 1973, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. is one of the largest social service providers in British Columbia with over 20 locations and 2 overseas offices. For more details, please visit: http://www.success.bc.ca/;
