S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Announces New Board

Vancouver A new S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Board was elected at its 35th Annual General Meeting today. Mr. Peter Kwok was appointed the Chair of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. (2008-2009). 

“We would like to acknowledge the contribution of outgoing Board of Directors. This year we have moved further to diversify the cultural background of our board members. We are delighted that the new board has 5 members of non-Chinese descent, including one of Korean, two of South Asian and two of European origin. All members are outstanding professionals from education, real estate, business, finance, legal, health and social services. We are committed to continue implementing the strategic direction of a multicultural service organization,” said Peter Kwok, the newly elected Chair of S.U.C.C.E.S.S.

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Board of Directors 2008-2009 

Chairman - Mr. Peter Kwok   

Mr. Peter Kwok is a business entrepreneur living in Vancouver.  He attended the University of Toronto and obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago.  

Mr. Kwok has been involved with community groups since 1992, having served on various City of Vancouver working and advisory groups and organizations such as the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden Society and Shaughnessy Heights Property Owners' Association.  He is a past president of the latter two organizations.  He is currently a member of the Board of Governors of Crofton House School.

 

Vice Chair - Mrs. Christine Brodie     

Mrs. Christine Brodie graduated with a Masters of Arts from California State University, Long Beach in 1971 and further university courses at UBC and SFU. She began her career as a classroom teacher and became a specialist in math and reading and working with children with learning disabilities. Mrs. Brodie currently serves as a Teacher Consultant for Richmond School District in Community Outreach and the District Autism Team. She works with students and is involved in professional development for staff. 

Mrs. Brodie’s community involvement included serving on Boards and Committees  -Richmond Caring Place Society (1994; Chair 1998-2002), Richmond Family Court Committee (1997 - 2002). She has also served on Boards in the financial sector - - Coast Capital Savings (1993-2008), Credit Union Central – BC (1997-2005), and The Co-operators Group (2002-2008). Mrs. Brodie is currently the Chair of Kwantlen University College Foundation, a member of Richmond Sunrise Rotary, Canadian Federation of University Women, volunteering for the Richmond Food Bank and Youth dragon boating teams.

 

Vice Chair - Mr. Dennis Chan             

Mr. Dennis Chan joined the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. board in 2004 and currently serves as the Vice Chair. Professionally, he is a director engaged in Regional Contract Management at the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. Despite having grown up in Vancouver, his previous employment involved working for the Florida and Hong Kong offices of Franklin Templeton on the corporate treasury and emerging markets teams, respectively. His previous social service experiences have been in the fields of healthcare and microfinance. 

Mr. Chan holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Hong Kong and a Master of Laws from Georgetown University. He is also licensed to practise law in the State of New York.

 

Treasurer - Mr. Thomas Tong             

Mr. Thomas Tong holds a Master of Arts degree from Simon Fraser University. He is also a Certified General Accountant and Certified Financial Planner with his own management consulting company. Mr. Tong has worked extensively in public accounting and management consulting business as well as computer system implementation. 

Mr. Tong's community involvement includes being the past president of Vancouver Cambie Lions Club and Wah Yan College Alumni (Vancouver) Association. He is currently serving as treasurer for the Chinese Federation of Commerce of Canada and Chinese Entrepreneurs Society of Canada.

 

Board Secretary - Mr. Lyall D. Knott, Q.C.               

Mr. Lyall Knott is a senior partner of Clark Wilson LLP’s Business Law Group.

He was born and raised in Vancouver and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1971 and Bachelor of Laws degree in 1972, both from the University of British Columbia. He obtained a Masters of Law from the University of London, England, in 1973 and in 1985 was appointed to the rank of Queen’s Counsel. 

Mr. Knott Q.C has achieved other noticeable achievements including being named Honourary Consul for the Republic of Tunisia in British Columbia and Yukon (1993), the Blythe Eagles Volunteer Service Award by the UBC Alumni Association (2000), Recipient of the Commonwealth Medal for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee (2002), Awarded the medal of Merit Award for outstanding citizenship (2003), Chair, Board of Directors UBC Foundation (2005), Chair, Board of Directors, Rick Hansen Man In Motion Foundation.

 

Ex-officio Member - Mr. Kenneth Tung         

Mr. Kenneth Tung has over 25 years of experience in business management and computer information systems. Prior to forming his company, Mr. Tung worked as a senior program analyst with the Vancouver Stock Exchange and CanFor. Within the community, he participates as director and committee member for several organizations. Mr. Tung is also a Chinese radio commentator and program host. 

His vast community experience includes being a council member of the British Columbia Institution of Chartered Accountants, member of the Board of Directors for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award B.C. and Yukon Region, Richmond General Hospital Ethics Committee, president of Civic Education Society, advisor for Chinese Consumers' Association of Vancouver, Ontario Youth Leadership Development Council and the Canadian Millennium Scholarship Foundation.  

Mr. Tung's involvement with S.U.C.C.E.S.S. includes being chairman, vice chair of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and chairman of the Public Affairs Committee and Membership and Volunteer Development Committee. He was also the chairperson of the Duke of Edinburgh's award group, founding chair of the Youth Leadership Development Program Advisory Committee, chairman of Walk with the Dragon 2001, co-chair of Settlement, Employment and Business Expo in 1997, chairman of the Volunteer Coordinating Council in 1994 and chairman of the Small Business and Self-employment Program Advisory Committee in 1999-2000.

 

Director - Mr. Paul Cheng

Mr. Paul Cheng graduated from the University of Victoria in 1997 with a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering. Since then, he has been working with BC Hydro and is currently an Operations Planning Engineer specialized in short-term power generation planning.

In early 1999, Mr. Paul Cheng, signed up with S.U.C.C.E.S.S. as a frontline volunteer for Groups and Community Services and Training Institute. His long history of community involvement also extends to other organizations such as the Multicultural Helping House, Douglas College, ISS, and SITEBC, where he supports underemployed skilled immigrants as a job mentor.

Mr. Cheng is a registered Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists BC, a founding Board member (and the 2006/07 president) with the Association of Chinese Canadian Professionals, and a foster parent with UNICEF, Plan Canada, and World Vision.


Director - Mrs. Maggie Ip     

Mrs. Maggie Ip graduated from the University of Ottawa with a master's degree in education.  She worked for the federal government in Ottawa before moving to Vancouver with her family in 1970.  She is an educator by profession with 30 years of teaching experience.  Mrs. Ip was elected a city councillor of Vancouver where she served a three year term.

Mrs. Ip was the founding chairman of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. in 1973 and B.C. Heritage Language Association in 1981.  She has worked on the boards of many community organizations such as the United Way of the Lower Mainland, YWCA, Vancouver Public Library, Immigrant Services Society of B.C., Affiliation of Multicultural Societies and Service Agencies of B.C. and B.C. Heritage Language Association. 

Mrs. Ip was a member of the Canadian Multicultural Consultative Council and the B.C. Ministry of Education Chinese Curriculum Committee. 

Her awards for community service include the National Volunteer Award, Canada 125th Anniversary Award, Rotary Club's Paul Harris Award, and Vancouver Multicultural Society's Nora Lozovsky Award. 

 

Director - Mr. Sukesh Kumar

Mr. Sukesh Kumar is a Chartered Accountant and is a partner with KPMG. In addition to devoting his time to work, he is a long-serving Board member at Vancouver Enterprise Forum and the Indus Entrepreneurs, where he served 4 years and 5 years respectively.  Mr. Kumar has strong experience being on the board of various not-for-profit organizations and has also been actively involved in the community.

 

Director - Dr. Susan Kwan    

Dr Kwan is a respirologist and internal medicine specialist. She graduated from the University of HK and was a Commonwealth scholar. She received specialist training from the Royal Brompton Hospital in England. 

Currently, Dr. Kwan is the director of the Critical Care Unit and department head of medicine at Burnaby Hospital; consultant respirologist for BC Center for Diseases Control and clinical associate for the Faculty of Medicine, UBC.

Dr. Kwan is an advocate for public education on health and wellness issues in the Asian community, medical education, smoking cessation, diabetes care, chronic illness care and palliative care programs.
 

Director - Dr. Wendy A. Leong, PharmD, BCPS, MBA       

Dr. Wendy A. Leong is a Research Director & Investigator in Cardiovascular & Thromboembotic Disease at Burnaby Research (formerly known as the Burnaby Hospital Research Department). She currently serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at the University of British Columbia and as a Consultant in Healthcare, Research & Education.

Her memberships extend through numerous Boards and Committees in the past, as a Scotia Bank Resource Centre for Women in Business Advisory Board Member; as the Simon Fraser University’s Executive MBA Alumni Board of Directors Chair; as a International Conference on Cardiovascular Medicine Advisory Committee Member; and as an Osteoporosis Canada BC Division Board Member.

Dr. Leong is currently active as an advisor for the College of Pharmacists of BC Advisory Panel, International Union of Angiology (Scientific Advisory Committee), Health Canada and the US Food & Drug Administration.

 

Director - Ms. Julie Liu          

Ms. Julie Liu is a licensed customs broker in Vancouver.  She is a life member of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and has been on the Board of Directors since 2004. She won the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Outstanding Member award in 1986.

Ms. Liu was the president of the Vancouver Pacific Lion Club in 1999, president of the Canadian Chinese Business Association in 2005-2007, vice president of Chinese Entrepreneurs Society of Canada in 2006-2007, and advisor of the Canadian China Business Women's Association from 2006-2007.

 

Director - Mr. Perry Lo         

Mr. Perry Lo graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours in Accounting from the University of British Columbia in 1998 and became a Chartered Accountant in 2001. He is an experienced auditor who has previously worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP here in Vancouver. Prior to starting his own business, Canaan Transport Group Inc., a transportation and logistics company, Mr. Lo served as the Director of Sales & Finance at Modern Terminal Ltd. 

He also has been an advocate of community organizations for a number of years. Currently he serves as a guest speaker at secondary and post secondary institutions for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC. He is the Nominations Committee Chair at the Chinese Community Policing Centre and in 2007 became the Chair for Vancouver Association of Community Policing Centres. Mr. Lo is also an active contributor to his local church.

 

Ms. Angela Y. MacKenzie

Ms. Angela Y. MacKenzie is a freelance journalist, who has more than eight years of experience covering municipal politics. Born in Seoul, Korea, she immigrated to Canada with her parents as a one-year-old. She grew up in Toronto, Ont. and moved to B.C. to attend the University of B.C., where she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature and political science. She later earned her journalism credentials at Langara College and has worked as a reporter since 1999. She is a former editor of Ricepaper, a national magazine focused on Asian-Canadian arts and culture, and her stories have appeared in newspapers throughout Greater Vancouver, including the Vancouver Sun, the Coquitlam Now and the North Shore News.

Ms. MacKenzie joined C3 Society -- a non-profit organization that helps to bridge the Korean and Canadian communities -- in 2004 as editor of the C3 News & Views newsletter and currently serves as the director of communications.
 

Director - Mr. Neil Shah 

Mr. Neil Shah has been the Purchasing and Sales Manager, dealing with European and South Asian customers, at Shatex MFG Corporation since 2002. Prior to this managerial position, he served at Canada 3000 Airlines as a passenger service and department agent for three years. 

Having a wealth of experience of customer relations, Mr. Neil Shah is eager to give back to the society. Since 1993, he has been actively involved with Gujarati Society of BC and was the Vice-President at Simon Fraser University Gujarati Student Society from 1998-99. In 2004, he joined Big Brother as an activity organizer and a mentor for elementary-school kids. He is currently involved in helping to organize Evergreen Earth Day through Guava Club.

 

Director - Mrs. Diana Tang

Since her immigration to Canada in 1990, Mrs. Diana Tang had served as Festival Manager of "Festival of Hong Kong 1992" and then as Program Manager in the Chinese Cultural Centre. After that, she worked with Hamazaki Wong Marketing Group as Account Director for some years before she retired as a result of a traffic accident.

Mrs. Tang's community involvement in Vancouver has been extensive. She was a member of Program Committee of Vancouver Art Gallery, External Affairs Secretary of Hong Kong University Alumni Association in BC, Committee Member of St. Stephen's Girls' College Alumni Association, Board Member of Chinese Cultural Centre as well as Judith Marcuse Dance Projects, and is currently Hon. Secretary of Fairchild TV Advisory Committee.  

 

Director - Ms. Janet Tsoi        

After earning her Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of British Columbia, Janet started and managed her own successful business for 18 years, building its annual sales to $12 million.  Shortly thereafter, Janet enhanced her education and updated her skills while she embarked on her second career – an investment associate – first with RBC Dominion Securities, now in a similar role at BMO Nesbitt Burns.  Janet is fully licensed in life insurance as well as investment securities, and is an accredited Professional Financial Planner. 

Janet has been very active in community service programs in recent years, holding the duties of Chair for the 3rd and 4th Annual CCF Youth Award for the Community Care Foundation, and as an active member of the planning committee for the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant, which has raised nearly $2.2 million to date.  Janet's membership and involvement on the planning committee for the B.C. CHildren's Hospital Foundation raised almost $45,000 in 2005, while her dedication to SUCCESS in the past has been equally as impressive.  In 2007, Janet helped that committee raise nearly $1 million during the SUCCESS Fundraising Gala.  

 

Director - Mr. Grant Yao         

Mr. Grant Yao is a real estate investor and broker in Vancouver.  He has been a member of the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Board of Directors since 2003 and served on the Building Development Committee and the chair of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Business & Economic Development Committee.  

Mr. Yao's community involvement includes being a foundation committee member of B.C. Children's Hospital, a steering committee member of Mount St. Joseph Hospital Foundation, secretary to the Taiwan Entrepreneur & Investors Association in B.C. and board member of the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce.  

He is currently a member of the Taiwan Chamber of Commerce and the president of the Rotary Club Vancouver South.

 

Director - Mr. Sing Lim Yeo   

Mr. Sing Lim Yeo has been a licensee Real Estate Agent since 1989 and is the Co-owner Broker of Royal Pacific Realty Corp & New World Realty which is the largest independently owned and operated Real Estate Company in British Columbia. 

Mr. Yeo graduated from Nanyang University in Singapore with a Bachelor of Science and speaks English, Bahasa Malaysian, and seven dialects of Chinese including (Cantonese, Hokkien, Chiu Chow, Hakka, Taiwanese etc…) 

He has been involved with many non-profit organizations since 1969 in his home country of Brunei. In Vancouver he has supported numerous non-profit organizations by providing significant financial support and involvement.

 

Director - Ms. Angela Wu       

Angela is presently the assistant vice president & branch manager of the Aberdeen Centre Branch in Richmond.  She has 19 years of banking career with various departments in HSBC. 

Angela is originally from Hong Kong and graduated from the University of British Columbia, majoring in Econometrics.  In the professional field, she has the personal financial planning designation from ICB and the Canadian Securities Course Diploma from CSI. 

Angela started her community work in Vancouver as a volunteer for S.U.C.C.E.S.S. in 1985, and worked on the committee for the volunteer development program.  She has been active in the Vancouver community by serving on the boards of several non-profit organizations, including Chinese Federation of Commerce of Canada, Richmond Asia Pacific Business Association and Shanghai Allied Society.  She was the past president of the Vancouver Cambie Lions Club and a recipient of the Melvin Jones Award from International Lions Society.

 

Director - Dr. Tom Yuen          

Dr. Tom Yuen is a registered psychologist and the director of the Passage Counselling and Education Institute. He is also a faculty staff of the Counselling Psychology program at the Trinity Western University.  He has been on the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Board of Directors since 2004 and worked on the CQI Committee and Strategic Planning Committee.  

Dr. Yuen has worked as a clinical consultant for the Salvation Army Counseling Services and the employee assistance program of Bank of Montreal.
