Tung Chan heads up one of B.C.'s most influential non-profits, the Vancouver-based organization S.U.C.C.E.S.S. That role has brought Chan's life full circle in this province. He arrived in 1974 from Hong Kong with little English and no money and worked as a volunteer with S.U.C.C.E.S.S. After a successful banking career with TD Bank for almost 30 years, he became S.U.C.C.E.S.S.' CEO in November 2006. A native of Hong Kong, he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of British Columbia. He served with distinction for 28 years with the TD Bank Financial Group where his last position was district vice-president in charge of 17 TD Canada Trust branches. From 1990 to 1993, Tung served for one term as a councillor of the City of Vancouver and acted as its Deputy Mayor in numerous occasions. Tung has worked on the boards of many community organizations. He was a leader of the Boys' and Girls' Club of Greater Vancouver (Director), the United Way of the Lower Mainland (Board and Campaign Cabinet member), International Financial Center Society of British Columbia (Vice Chair), Richmond Public Library (Chair), Kwantlen Polytechnic University (Board member) and E-Comm Emergency Communications For Southwest BC Inc. (Chair). He also helped found the Richmond Bogside Boys Scout Group (Advisor), the Kelowna Chinese Cultural Association (Treasurer), the Pender Guy Radio Program (Producer) and the Centennial Toastmaster Club (Mentor). Tung is presently a member of BC Premier's Chinese Community Advisory Committee, the Asian Pacific Foundation Board, The Vancouver Foundation’s Honourary Governors’ Council, the Immigrant Employment Council of British Columbia, the Metropolis BC Board and a board advisor of MusicFest Vancouver. Tung is a frequent commentator in the media on social, multicultural and immigration related issues. He has a blog page in the Vancouver Sun. In 2002, Tung was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in recognition of his contribution to the community. In his leisure time, Tung enjoys reading and swimming. |
