| S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Employment Mentoring Program |
|
The Program’s core activity is the specialized matching of skilled newcomers with Mentors who have Canadian experience in the Client’s field. While immigrants often have mentoring needs in common, their level of knowledge about the labour market, specific mentoring needs, and understanding of how they might fulfill market demand varies greatly. Following an assessment of individual needs, skilled immigrant Clients are matched with Mentors who are capable of supporting and guiding the Mentee’s career development in Canada.

What is the Employment Mentoring Program (EMP)? A number of research has indicated that there is a linkage between mentoring and career success. The Employment Mentoring Program (EMP) provides professional newcomers with guidance, advice, and support on career planning and development as well as access to B.C. Labour Market Information (LMI). The professional newcomers, i.e., the mentees, will be matched with the local professionals, i.e., the mentors, through the EMP ’s mentorship process. The mentees will learn about job search techniques, effective professional networking, and labour market trends. EMP provides 1-to-1 mentoring, group mentoring, peer mentoring, e-mentoring and follow up services for 2 to 5 months*. At the end of the program, we hope our clients can achieve EMP learning outcomes, which is matched with professional in the similar fields. We also hope our clients had a better ideas and understanding about their career plan and Canadian workplace culture. *Remarks: The length of the mentoring matches is for 2 to 5 months, depending on the model of delivery, the needs of each Client and the availability of suitable Mentors. The average duration is expected to be 3 months. • Active Involvement & P2P (Professional-to-Professional) Matching The program believes that the professional newcomers who are more actively involved in the EMP activities and through the Professional to Professional matching will have a higher likelihood of achieving the EMP learning outcomes. • Community Linkages & Career WorkshopsThe program hooks up with community leaders to launch different kinds of events and activities for newcomers. Career workshops such as effective resume writing, B.C. labour market information, and professional networking technique will be provided for the professional newcomers to enhance their employability skills.

The main purpose of EMP service is to assist clients (i.e. mentees) with their short-term and long-term goals of finding commensurate employment in Canada by helping them better understand the labour market and take appropriate steps along their career path. EMP aligns with Program Principles of Settlement & Integration Services:
Skilled professional newcomers are matched with occupational specific mentors who are established residents familiar with the social, cultural, labour market and political systems inherent in BC/Canada in order to accelerate the settlement and integration process into Canadian society and BC communities.

Remark: Mentoring Action Plan (MAP) is a guidance worksheet which can keep the mentoring relationship on track. It is believed that mentees who are more actively engaged in the MAP process would enjoy the greater EMP learning outcomes. At the end of the program, we hope our clients (i.e. mentees) can achieve EMP learning outcomes, which are matched with professionals in similar fields. We also hope our mentees had a better idea and understanding about their career pathways as well as Canadian workplace culture. •Active Engagement & P2P (Professional-to-Professional) Matching The program believes that the professional newcomers who are more actively engaged in the EMP activities and that through the Professional to Professional (P2P) matching, they will have a higher likelihood of achieving the EMP learning outcomes. •Industry Networking Events, Orientation & Workshops
The program reaches out to different industrial and community leaders to launch different kinds of events and activities for professional newcomers. Orientation provides a framework to clarify expectations between the mentor and mentee and it can help a mentee to set realistic career goals. Career workshops such as effective resume writing, Labour Market Information (LMI), and professional networking techniques as well as other, will help professional newcomers to enhance their employability skills.
