維護社區安全與共同價值觀
移民與反種族歧視社區論壇

溫哥華 - 中僑互助會將於2017年2月22日(星期三)在溫哥華市中心「卑詩大學洛遜廣場」(UBC Robson Square)舉辦社區論壇,討論移民與反種族歧視、維護社區安全問題,論壇邀得加拿大駐挪威大使Artur Wilczynski發表主題演講,論壇獲卑詩省政府及溫哥華市政府支持,歡迎公眾參加。

近月來,針對新來者的種族歧視事件屢屢發生,部分媒體也出現種族情緒膨脹的趨勢,這都值得關注。論壇將就種族歧視、對新來者的歧視、對新舊移民帶來的影響展開討論。中僑互助會邀請了合作夥伴、行業和社區領袖參與此論壇,重申加拿大共同的價值觀、認同移民為加拿大、卑詩省繁榮昌盛所做出的貢獻。

論壇先由一個專家小組,就涉及社區內的反種族歧視、歷史重要性、社區如何促進癒合種族主義帶來的創痛等問題舉行專題討論,之後由Wilczynski大使發表主題演講。論壇將會提出行動倡議,包括促進融和、包容和社會持續發展。

論壇定於2月22日(星期三)下午1:30 至 4:30舉行,地點:UBC Robson Square, 800 Robson Street, Vancouver。

參與專題討論的專家包括: 卑詩大學臨床合作與專業執行副院長 Gurdeep Parhar 博士、加拿大真相與和解委員會大使Robert Joseph大酋長、卑詩大學精神病學榮譽教授及溫哥華浩劫教育中心創始主席和外展演講嘉賓講師 Robert Krell 博士、聯邦參議員胡元豹、教育顧問姬思保定、MNP 顧問 Judith Bosire 、中僑項目助理Sarah Al-Qaysi 及Yigeda 及 燈飾公司企業家Travis Chen。

此外,爲確保在論壇提出的行動倡議得以長久展開,中僑計畫2017春季在其大溫服務中心舉行一系列社區圓桌會議。與大溫各社區人士分享及反映多元性的意見,希望透過參與社區文化融合,以建立安全的社區。每個圓桌會議將邀請20至50人參加。

中僑同時會製作一部有關新移民的重要性及移民對社區的貢獻的紀錄片,採訪知名及受人尊敬的移民。這部紀錄片將成為增強社區凝聚力(包括高中和高校學生)的一個重要工具,使社會更好地了解移民在社區建設中的重要作用。該紀錄片將透過多種渠道傳播,包括特別放映發布、網絡和社交媒體等,也會在高中和大學內放映,推廣到學校基層。

artur wilczynskiHis Excellency Artur Wilczynski
Ambassador of Canada to Norway

Ambassador Artur Wilczynski presented credentials to Norway’s King Harald V in December 2014. He is also Canada’s Head of Delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. His work in Norway promotes economic opportunities for Canadians, advances shared interests and reflects Canadian approaches to diversity and inclusion. He engages with Norway’s Indigenous Sami people, religious minorities, immigrants, Arctic communities and Norway’s LGBTQ community. He is an advocate for Holocaust education and remembrance and for anti-discrimination and human rights. Prior to becoming Canada’s Ambassador to Norway, he was the Director General of International Security & Intelligence at Global Affairs Canada. He also worked in leadership positions at Public Safety Canada and the Department of Canadian Heritage. He was the Chair of the Inter-American Committee on Culture and was named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the Government of France for his work at UNESCO on cultural diversity. Artur has a Master of Arts in International Relations from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and is married to his partner of 30 years Randy Stocker. They live together with their dog Colt and cat Lilly in Oslo, Norway.

christine brodieChristine Brodie
Education Consultant

Mrs. Christine Brodie graduated with a Master of Arts from California State University, Long Beach. She began her career as a classroom teacher and became a specialist in math, reading and working with children with learning disabilities. Mrs. Brodie retired recently from Richmond School District where she was a Teacher Consultant in Community Outreach and the District Autism Team. Her community involvement has included serving on boards and committees - Richmond Caring Place Society (1994; Chair 1998-2002), S.U.C.C.E.S.S. (2007-2014; Chair 2012-2013). She has also served on Boards in the financial sector - Coast Capital Savings (1993-2008), Credit Union Central - BC (1997-2005), and The Co-operators Group (2002-2008). Mrs. Brodie is currently a Director at Kwantlen Polytechnic University Foundation (former Chair), Richmond Sunrise Rotary (past President), and enjoys volunteering for the Richmond Food Bank.


gurdeep parharDr. Gurdeep Parhar
Executive Associate Dean, Clinical Partnerships & Professionalism, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia

Dr. Parhar is an internationally renowned expert on equity, diversity and professionalism. He has previously held the roles of Acting Associate Vice President – Equity & Inclusion for UBC, Co-Acting Head and Associate Head of the UBC Department of Family Practice, and National Co-Chair for the Group on Equity, Diversity & Gender for the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada. His clinical practice focuses on immigrants, refugees, workers’ health and patients with severe disabilities. He also coordinates Avoiding Mistreatment and Anti-Harassment workshops addressing racism, homophobia, and bullying for the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry. In addition, Dr. Parhar has co-hosted a weekly television program, entitled “Pearls for Success”, targeting new immigrants and refugees to improve their functioning in health, education, law and finance. His May 2016 TedTalk, entitled “Fixing Racism” was live streamed to over 100 countries and, within 4 weeks of being posted online, has been watched by over 1 million viewers.

judith bosireJudith Bosire
Consultant, MNP

Judith grew up in a small village in Kisii, in Western Kenya. She was presented with an opportunity to pursue her university studies in the United States on a scholarship. Upon graduation, she was recruited to work for Merrill Lynch on Wall Street. In 2011, Judith relocated to Vancouver to study her master’s degree at Simon Fraser University. While here, she met her husband, an Australian who was undertaking his fellowship at UBC. They have both recently received their permanent residency, joining other Canadian immigrants who have chosen to make Canada their home. Judith is currently a Consultant at MNP, where she supports economics analysis services and Aboriginal economic development issues. She is also a co-founder of DNA Romance, a venture that provides a scientific dating platform, as well as serves on the Board of Directors for Shanti Uganda, a NGO that supports maternal health in rural Uganda.

robert josephChief Robert Joseph
Reconciliation Canada Ambassador

Chief Joseph is the Ambassador for Reconciliation Canada and a member of the National Assembly of First Nations Elders Council. He was formerly the Executive Director of the Indian Residential School Survivors Society and is an honourary witness to Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). As Chairman of the Native American Leadership Alliance for Peace and Reconciliation and Ambassador for Peace and Reconciliation with the Inter-religious and International Federation for World Peace (IFWP), Chief Joseph has sat with the leaders of South Africa, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia and Washington, DC to learn from and share his understanding of faith, hope, healing and reconciliation.

robert krellDr. Robert Krell
Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia and Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre Founding President & Outreach Speaker

Dr. Robert Krell is a child survivor of the Holocaust, devoted to understanding the problems of Holocaust survivor-families and supporting their well-being. In his private practice, Dr. Krell treated Holocaust survivors and their families, as well as Dutch survivors of Japanese concentration camps. He is also the founding President of the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre. For these activities, he received the 1998 State of Israel Bonds Elie Wiesel Remembrance Award. Dr. Krell has published several articles and books, among them, “And Life Is Changed Forever: Holocaust Childhoods Remembered.” His interests remain in the psychiatric treatment of aging survivors of massive trauma and participating in programmes against racism and prejudice. Dr. Krell continues to speak all over North America about the Holocaust and was the keynote speaker addressing the United Nations during its International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust in 2012. He and Marilyn have nine grandchildren.

yuen pau wooThe Honourable Yuen Pau Woo
Senator, B.C.

Prior to joining the Senate, Yuen Pau Woo was President of HQ Vancouver, which promotes British Columbia as a location for head offices of international companies. From 2005-2014, he was President and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. He is also Senior Resident Fellow at the Beedie School of Business; Senior Fellow in Public Policy at the Institute of Asian Research; as well as co-founder and President of China Global. He is on the boards for organizations such as the Vancouver Academy of Music, Mosaic Institute, and the Canadian Ditchley Foundation. From 2002-2012, he was Canada's representative on the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council and served as the founding chair of PECC's flagship State of the Region report. Mr. Woo has previously worked and consulted for organizations such as the Monetary Authority of Singapore, World Bank and APEC. In 2012, he was honoured with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Award for his contributions to Canada-Asia relations.

sarah al qaysiSarah Al-Qaysi

Growing up in a medical family, Sarah developed an early interest in sciences and is currently a university student working towards achieving her bachelor degree in the health sciences program. Coming to Canada six years ago helped Sarah move toward a new path in her life as well as giving her the opportunity to learn about different cultures embedded in the Canadian community. As a program assistant at S.U.C.C.E.S.S., Sarah hopes to help newcomers from all backgrounds and ages to create and maintain harmony within the Canadian community.

President, Yigeda

Travis Chen is an entrepreneur who has developed numerous business ventures within both Canada and China, in the areas of research and manufacturing, real estate and property management, lighting distribution, farm operations, and health. His companies include Yigeda Bio-tech Ltd., Yigeda Enterprise Inc., Yigeda Lighting Ltd., G&C Agriculture Ltd., Beijing TongRenTang, GSL Lab, and Larcare Health. Travis received his MSc in Information Systems from the London School of Economics, MSc in Computer Science from Kings College, and BEng in Material Science from Imperial College.
